Oral History Intern
THIS ROLE IS FOR FORDHAM COLLEGE AT ROSE HILL AND FORDHAM COLLEGE AT LINCOLN CENTER STUDENTS ONLY
The Bronx County Archives at The Bronx County Historical Society Research Library seeks an intern to assist with all aspects of ongoing community-based oral history endeavors. In collaboration with the Society’s archivist, intern will form close relationships with and compile research dossiers on prospective interviewees and relevant community organizations. Intern will participate in select oral history interviews, which are currently being conducted via video-conferencing software, with increasing degrees of responsibility and will assist in transcribing or coordinating the transcription of recorded oral histories.
Other responsibilities may include data management and providing scheduling and technical assistance. An example of the latter would be walking interviewees through the basics of video-conferencing software in preparation for an oral history. Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, this is a remote internship. However, if the situation with the pandemic improves significantly over the course of the internship, there may be optional opportunities for on-site work at The Bronx County Historical Society.
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include a strong interest and academic background in history, anthropology, sociology, theology, or related fields. Fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Khmer is a plus. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, video conferencing apps (primarily Zoom), and Adobe preferred. Time commitments to be discussed between intern and supervisor. Many aspects of the internship will be time flexible and can be conducted at the intern’s convenience. The oral histories themselves will typically be scheduled Monday–Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm, though the occasional evening or weekend scheduling might occur with ample notice.
