This paid internship is funded by the Cultural Engagement Internships program and is only available to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill.
Orion Graphic Design Internship
Hours: 8-10 hours per week
Work Format: Remote
Start Date: January 2023
End Date: May/June 2023
Organization Description: Orion is a magazine of environmental writing which invites readers into a community of caring for the planet. Through writing and art that explore the connection between nature and culture, Orion inspires new thinking about how humanity might live on Earth justly, sustainably, and joyously. Recent contributors to Orion include Margaret Atwood, Ross Gay, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Robert Macfarlane, and Aimee Nezhukumatathil.
Orion produces a mix of magazine stories, referrals, and original content on its website 3-4x per week, drawing an annual traffic of approx. 1.2 million visits. This position will be primarily tasked with creating graphics to support the publication of that content, along with occasional design projects for marketing, fundraising, and editorial.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This intern will participate in the creation, development, publication, and promotion of the work at the heart of Orion, and will experience the many ways in which design supports the publishing workflow. Projects may include:
- Generating visual assets for email newsletter
- Designing inserts for the magazine, fundraising communications, and mailers
- Creating photoshop templates for social media posts and website banners
- Mobilizing magazine content to the website
QUALIFICATIONS
An applicant for this position should have:
- Proficiency with Photoshop and InDesign
- Familiarity with project management tools like Slack and Asana
- Comfort with working remotely
The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:
- Creating gifs and animations
- Experience with WordPress or other CMSs
- Appreciation for environmental writing
