Development and Communications Intern
The Sex Workers Project (SWP) at the Urban Justice Center offers free immigration legal services to sex workers and sex trafficking survivors. Many of our clients are Spanish-speaking and members of LGBTQ communities who have done sex work by choice, because of their circumstances, or because they were coerced. SWP also engages in policy advocacy and education to decriminalize sex work. SWP represents clients in affirmative and defensive applications for immigration relief. The team also helps clients avoid and/or mitigate the immigration consequences of contact with the criminal justice system and works closely with clients’ criminal defense attorneys on pending criminal matters.
SWP is currently seeking new sources of funding so that we can continue to provide the life-saving services to the communities we have served for over 20 years. SWP seeks a Development & Communications Intern to help build and revive our social media and communications with the goal of increasing our visibility, effectively communicating our work and our mission and highlighting our successes. The Development & Communications Intern will support SWP in achieving our project’s development, PR, marketing, and communications goals. This position will provide hands-on experience in managing development and communications administrative tasks.
The position will include creating engaging social media content, including graphics and mobile videos, and monitoring their effectiveness, supporting media relations; creating engaging email marketing content including regular newsletters; updating the website; conducting research related to our advocacy; and assisting with other communications duties as directed. The position will also include providing administrative support for potential fundraisers, support with donor development, including research, writing appeal letters, and strategies for donor engagement.
Qualifications:
- In-depth knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn
- Bachelor’s degree (or currently pursuing) or equivalent experience in marketing, media, communications, or a related field
- Passionate about the mission of SWP and the areas immigration, sex worker rights, LGBTQ+ rights.
Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Detail oriented and organized
- Excellent time management skills and self-initiative, comfortable working both collaboratively and independently
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Experience managing social media platforms
- Experience with design (Ex: Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) preferred
- Experience utilizing social media analytics preferred
- Have a team spirit and a strong work ethic
