A Brooklyn Navy Yard-based outdoor recreational space builder is seeking a Passive House Carpenter.


They are celebrating their 13 year anniversary and is embarking on its fourth year as an Architect Led Design Build, with the aim of ensuring that what is carefully and thoughtfully designed, is constructed precisely as intended. Passionate about retrofitting our existing building stock for energy efficiency and resiliency using the Passive House design methodology, they pay as much attention to the embodied energy and health of the materials used in their designs as they do to ensuring the functionality and durability of the buildings, they work on remain for decades to come. In hiring for this position, they are looking for an individual who has 5+ years’ experience with townhouse construction, with both rough and finish carpentry emphasis. The ideal candidate will be a natural problem solver, enthusiastic in taking agency in their craft in pursuit of energy efficient, detail-oriented, high end residential construction. They should be efficient in their work and have a desire to learn new ways to approach solutions in construction.

Core Responsibilities:

Carpenters are key members of the build team; responsible for supporting the Point Person and the Lead Foreperson, focusing their key tasks on successful in-house construction scopes. Specifically, they will be responsible for the follow tasks:
 

  • Good understanding of reading and interpreting plans.
  • Capable of assessing a demolition situation and safely and efficiently completing the demolition process.
  • Proficient in the installation of doors, both pre-hung doors and slabs requiring mortising.
  • Proficient in the installation of baseboard, shoe molding, door casings.
  • Proficient in the installation of floor framing, leveling and sistering.
  • Proficient in the installation of subfloor.
  • Proficient in the layout and construction of wooden walls.
  • Proficient in the layout and construction of metal walls.
  • Proficient with the setup of ladders and baker scaffolding.
  • Proficient at safely removing and correctly installing exterior doors and windows.
  • Proficient at using all tools expected of a carpenter- table saw, circular saw, jig saw, sawzall, routers, drills and drivers, compressors and pneumatic nailers, miter saw.
  • An understanding of maintenance of all tools on site.
  • Capable of identifying various fasteners and their appropriate usage.
  • Foresight to identify unsafe situations on the job site – and skill to r​​emedying unsafe situations.
  • An embedded sense of time required to complete an assigned task and the ability to follow through with completing it on time
  • Capable of estimating time accurately for tasks and planning time strategically to ensure time reliability.

In-House Construction scopes include:

  • Deconstruction, cataloging, and careful storage.
  • Waste stream management.
  • Structural Framing & Rough Carpentry.
  • Masonry repairs & lime plaster WRB.
  • Air Barrier & Blower door testing.
  • High Performance Window Installation.
  • Finish Carpentry (casing, baseboards, exterior trims, shades).
  • Millwork Fabrication, Assembly and Installation.

 

  • We are looking for a self-motivated, highly communicative, and team focused carpenter, with an astute attention to detail. Experience with Passive House construction is beneficial, but not required, as we will train incoming carpenters in this method.

 

  • Carpenters are expected to keep our job sites meticulously organized and clean. These tasks would include picking up and accepting deliveries, checking for and documenting any damage, and securely storing and organizing materials. This person will ideally be working on a single renovation project at a time, with the occasional transition to other job sites as required for holistic project sequencing.

 

  • Carpenters will have to perform direct work as well as understand architectural and engineering drawings to critically question design intent and the means and methods to achieve the desired goals of the design.

 

  • Carpenters also work directly with our designers, architects, project managers, and directors to develop new assemblies and methods for better constructability and efficiency. We have a full-service woodworking shop at our 3,000 SF studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yards for use in prototyping mock-ups and testing new installation assemblies. In addition, we are often a key millwork subcontractor for our own projects and therefore the position would entail interfacing with the millwork fabrication team in-house to streamline this integration into the management of the project.

Wage range: $33-40/ hr depending on experience and craft alignment This is a full-time employment position.
