Education Intern- Summer 2025

Title: Education Internship (Summer Soccer Scholars Program)

Department: Program- South Bronx United Academy

Time Commitment: Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-3:30pm; Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm

Program dates: Monday, July 7th 2025 to Friday, August 15th 2025

South Bronx United uses soccer as a vehicle for social change, aiming to help youth build character, teamwork, and leadership skills so that they can succeed in  education, careers, their community and beyond. South Bronx United strives to promote educational achievement, health and wellness, and character development through activities on and off the soccer field and to unite an incredibly diverse community toward common positive goals.

Position Description:

Please note- this is an in-person internship opportunity

Education Interns will serve as assistant teachers and mentors in the SBU’s summer program which combines soccer and education to keep youth active and learning during the summer months. Interns will work with students (grades 6-11) in the classroom for three classes daily, out on the soccer field every afternoon for training and games, as well as on field trips every Friday. This internship is a great opportunity to gain experience working with middle school/high school aged students in a diverse urban community.

Please note this is an unpaid internship: SBU will work with your academic institution to provide academic credit.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist program staff in the SBU Summer Scholars Program, a 4-6 week program that keeps our student athletes active and learning during the summer.
  • Work as an assistant teacher with a specific grade-level cohort (grades 6-11) for three 1 hour classes (ELA, Math and Life Skills)
  • Plan curriculum and facilitate a high interest, elective class
  • Lead and plan community building activities through the course of the program
  • Assist with program transitions, lunch and afternoon soccer practices
  • Aid in helping student-athletes build strong social-emotional skills on the field through healthy competition and supportive coaching
  • Model positive behavior for student athletes that align with SBU values
  • Engage and chaperone student athletes during Friday field trips and represent South Bronx United in a positive manner
  • Collaborate with SBU staff and volunteers with best practices

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for working with student athletes ranging in age from 11-19
  • College students majoring in education, psychology, sociology
  • No soccer experience necessary but candidates with an interest in soccer or coaching will have the opportunity to be an assistant coach during the afternoon soccer sessions
  • Fluency in an language other than English preferred (many of our students may also speak Spanish or French)
  • Interpersonal skills such as empathy, active listening, cultural awareness, sensitivity and adaptability
  • Enthusiasm with the mission of South Bronx United and the South Bronx community
