Communications Manager Intern

What I liked

Through this job I am constantly communicating via internally and externally. I am assisting the Communications Manager in completing a variety of projects that have ranged from writing press releases, writing plant newsletters, reviewing media scripts, taking pictures for media broadcasts and more. This job is one that is never the same day to day, but with some routine expectations. Being on behind the scenes, of one of the classic American sportscar is truly an experience unlike any other.

What I wish was different

This job is giving me great exposure to handling many different projects at once and allows me to work on some very cool but confidential projects. The only thing I wish was different is I could talk about what I do with peers but, keeping information within the plant and not sharing is the most important part of this job.

Advice

The biggest piece of advice for whoever has this job after me would be to always being willing to help anyone. This meaning that just because you work in the communications department don't feel that you can't help engineers, HR, the plant manager and more people throughout the plant.

Corporate Giving Intern

What I liked

I loved being an active participate by directly impacting the community of Detroit through working with ten high schoolers and two GM retirees.

What I wish was different

There isn't much that I would change about the experience, it was very eyeopening and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the program.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share is to be prepared to build long lasting relationships and participate in leadership activities. It is a hands-on program that can be very beneficial to developing essential career building skills.

EWO Execution Intern

What I liked

I loved the team I worked with and how helpful everyone was! They made sure I was busy doing things that were interesting and value-adding instead of typical intern projects. I was able to go on plant tours at three of the North American plants and attend multiple intern events within GPSC. I also liked how they made sure that every intern had two mentors that were in the TRACK Rotational program to grab coffee or lunch with and answer any questions we had about future opportunities with the company!

What I wish was different

Although my experience at GM was great, I do wish there were more corporate intern events. It would have been nice to network with interns outside of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain (GPSC) and learn about other experiences within the company. There were a couple opportunities throughout the summer, but those were more professional based instead of social.

Advice

Get to know as many people as possible! The culture at GM is amazing and everyone I met and worked with were personable and friendly. I was able to get to know many people within my department as well as those in completely different fields. Networking is huge at GM, and the more people you know, the better off you will be!

Quality manufacturing intern

What I liked

I liked that I was working in the automotive industry and was able to be hands on when I wanted to be. The other employees at GM were super nice and willing to help me at all times.

What I wish was different

I wish that my supervisor had given me more direction but he sat back and watched me figure out what I was capable of.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to jump in and ask questions and tell your supervisor what you want to do while you are working, they like the initiation.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed the manufacturing plant life. Seeing the assembly of full size trucks from start to finish made you value the work that goes on in plants.

What I wish was different

I worked during launch, a very hectic time period where interns didn't get much attention or responsibility that they normally get in other periods.

Advice

Find diversity groups, sport teams, and network in the company to build relationships. The clubs and organizinations you are involved in school exist beyond school and could be found in companies.

Program Management Intern- Full Size Trucks

What I liked

My summer at GM was challenging yet rewarding. The intern program is called EXCEL, and is very well organized. Each intern reports to a manager who will guide them throughout the summer. There are also company-wide events and organization events for interns to allow time for networking. My manager allowed time for questioning and self exploring. This helped me apply what I was learning about in school while also taking some things back as I finish my senior year. I was able to learn and practice supply chain on a global level.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would've been longer (it's 12 weeks), I was starting to get into a good groove with the company and my project.

Advice

GM is a big company, use all the resources that it provides so that you can be successful!

Supply Chain Intern

What I liked

I loved the fast-paced manufacturing environment. There is always something to do, and there were plenty of opportunities to take on meaningful projects and see the impact in the plant. This was my second summer at LDT, and between the two summers I got to complete an OpEx Project, group lead, build an Access database, do a safety project, and more. Not to mention the people here were awesome, I loved getting to know our UAW partners; it never fails to make me smile when I walk down the line and get waves from countless team members!

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more networking events. Between LDT and LGR there are a substantial amount of interns, and I did not get to know any of them. Along with that, I would have liked to have more networking with leadership. Lunch and Learns, Q&A's, and other events would have been a great way to get to know leadership.

Advice

Be Bold! Ask for more work, ask people to have lunch with you, and smile! Your internships are what you make it, so take charge and make your time as value added as possible.

What I liked

I loved everything imaginable about working for General Motors. Not only did I learn the importance of my job through hands-on tasks, but also increased my knowledge on mass-production in the automotive industry. It got me excited for my future in an engineering career.

I have no critical complaints, however, tours of different plants should have been more spread out as it conflicted with my work schedule.

By far one of the most useful internships. I learned a great deal of information and had fun while learning it.

Where I lived. Also, office was a tad bleak, but I’m biased toward sunlit rooms.

Advice

Always continue learning and develop a broad knowledge of your field; the details will become more important depending on the scope of a certain project. Also, never be afraid to outsource assistance. A team of engineers will always outdo a single engineer in a specific task.

Front End Software Development Intern

What I liked

I liked the facility I worked at. The Renaissance Center is an impressive building and the fact that it is right at the heart of Detroit makes it more enticing to work there. Also, the work I completed there was directly related to the software engineering concepts I have been learning at Manchester University.

What I wish was different

I wish the traffic for getting in and out of the city did not exist because I had to spend two hours commuting every workday. However, the software problems I was solving and the employees I was working with made the internship a valuable and memorable experience.

Advice

Stay connected with the people you meet through internships and co-ops. These connections can lead to many future employment opportunities!

I loved being able to go out on the floor and see the manufacturing process. I wasn't always sitting behind a computer. It was very hands on.

I would have liked to have had more projects.

If GM offers you a job and you're passionate about what they do, take it. They treat their employees extremely well and I got to learn so much.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I liked having real full-time level projects with real monetary gains/savings for the company. Certainly not busy work. Having a company and boss willing to spend ten's of thousands of dollars on your designs that should benefit the company even more is very confidence inspiring and rewarding.

What I wish was different

More consistant workload. When designing and purchasing equipment I was very busy. Waiting for items to come in from machine shops I had some slow days I would look for more work.

Advice

Confidence is key. Theyre not looking for a student to come in and act like a know it all. There's a middle ground, but I would error on the side of caution. Watch, listen and learn from the leaders in the company. When its your time to knockout a project, be very thorough. Put together a quick powerpoint explaining the objective, results and most importantly your reasoning for your conclusions/thought process.

Had some payroll issues towards the end of my internship.

Advice

I encourage everyone to go learn what its like to work in industry! In my college experience, professors always encouraged research positions and graduate school, but I would have never thought that I would enjoy working in industry unless I gave it a try.
