Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2022 • Flint, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience of working in the automotive industry and understanding how the manufacturing process works when it comes to assembling vehicles.

What I wish was different

It is hard to wish for something different with this internship, given that it has provided me with life-long skills and experiences. I really cannot see anything that I wish were different rather I wish I prepared better for the internship on my end to make the experience much better for myself.

Advice

Try new things, go apply for that internship, even if you think your chances of getting in are low. When you are at your internship, give it your best, put yourself out there and always ask for help when in doubt.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

January 2023 • Warren, MI

What I liked

I have enjoyed several aspects of my experience at GM so far. One is the welcoming atmosphere; I never would have thought such a large company could have a family-like feel at work. That goes along with the second reason, which is that I had a large support base of peers and mentors to help me through my projects and life at GM overall. I most enjoyed the excitement and freedom with my assignments. I was able to work in multiple areas with different groups, and I truly feel like I learned a great deal, as well as gaining certifications I could have never gotten otherwise.

What I wish was different

There is not much I can say that I wish was different. There were slower days where I may be waiting to progress with my assignments, which can be a little frustrating, but that is no fault of my team or the company as a whole. Certain pauses are all part of any assignment. All in all, I mostly have only positive things to say.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to always push yourself to be involved. Whether it be in social settings or just tagging along for a quick meeting, any of these things can bring opportunities you may not have been expecting. Putting yourself out there by showing dedication and curiosity, especially in a competitive environment, is the best way to excel in any co-op. GM recognizes this dedication.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

January 2023 • Fort Wayne, IN

What I liked

You get incredible and diverse experiences. If you find a groove where they can utilize you, they will continue to throw work at you that you're good at. Also everyone there is extremely helpful and if you ask they will help you no questions.

What I wish was different

More clear expectations on working weekends, as well as giving you work that pertains to your major rather than putting you in departments where your skillset is not very viable.

Advice

You are expected to work weekends, they don't force you to but it is heavily encouraged and it is where the best experiences are.

Mechanical Design Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Warren, MI

What I liked

The work environment at General Motors would push you to being better at learning new skills while mastering the skills you already have. This is one of the biggest things I liked while working at General Motors.

What I wish was different

I wish that my internship had lasted a bit longer than it actually did. Also, there were hiccups here and there with regards to receiving my equipment from GM in a timely manner.

Advice

ASK QUESTIONS. This is something that will help you in ways you hadn't thought of. Since you'll be working at GM for a limited time as an intern, the more you can know, the better you'll be at completing your projects. Also, asking questions is better than assuming things, especially in an environment where even a small change can lead to a totally different outcome.

Tool & Die Group Leader

June - December 2022 • Lansing, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed that it is a very large company and I was given the flexibility to work with whatever team I wanted for a day or so to learn their responsibilities. This allowed me to get a working understanding of the day to day operations of the entire plant, and my role within that.

What I wish was different

I was specifically hired in to work with the launch of some new vehicles within stamping operations. Unfortunately the timeline of said launch was pushed back, outside of the 6-month term that I was there for. This led to me searching for things to do on 80% of the days, often not able to find something engaging. I was able to assume roles of various coworkers during their absence for a day or two here and there, which I truly enjoyed. I do not blame anyone for the project I was brought in to work on getting delayed, I just wish there was SOMETHING else for me to spend my time on. Also, the group leader position is not engineering. It's most often a middle management position working with hourly workers in a union. There tended to be a consistent "us versus them" mentality between the hourly and management. Just be mentally prepared for that.

Advice

GM is a huge company with a role for you somewhere. Initiate conversations with people outside of your team and learn what they do. If possible, go work with them for a day and see if you like it.

Manufacturing Controls Engineering intern

June - September 2022 • Spring Hill, TN

What I liked

I thought that there were a lot of opportunities to get a lot of experience and work on a lot of projects. I really liked experiencing the manufacturing environment.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more help in finding temporary housing nearby.

Advice

Manufacturing, especially in General Assembly, is a people job. There are so many people involved in each step, doing different tasks. I found that most of these people were very excited to share their experiences and talk about there role. I think in a role like this, it is so important to try and learn as much about the environment as possible. I think the best way to do so is to reach out to the people around you and ask questions.

Industrial Engineering Intern

June 2020 • Lockport, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the experience offered to me at General Motors. I was able to work with multiple different departments at the manufacturing plant. Some of the projects I enjoyed the most were creating and editing layouts, working with quality engineers to review products, and do trial runs.

What I wish was different

I don't think I would change anything about my internship, I was constantly learning new things and pushed to do my best work.

Advice

Search out more projects to work on. If there is ever a dull moment don't just sit and wait around for a new project to fall in your lap. Go out and ask your supervisor to give you more work or ask if there is anything else for you to work on. This along with seeking out projects you are interested in. If you see something that you could make better, go out and work with others to solve that problem.
